Smartphones....in 3D?

Aside from all the new phones out there these days, there are new technologies showcasing all the time, and 3D technology is one of them. There are currently two devices available in the Rogers line up that feature this technology - the HTC Evo 3D and the LG Optimus 3D. The best part about it? You don't have to wear those goofy glasses to enjoy amazing 3D pictures and video!

But just how does the technology work? We all remember the 3D pictures we had as kids that were red and green fuzzy images until we put on the included cardboard specs, so how come we don't have to wear them now?

For all those tech enthusiasts out there, here is your answer. There are two technologies used to enable a glasses-free 3D experience - lenticular display and parallax barrier. Lenticular works best at distance and on larger displays (this was used on those old rules and stickers that, when tilted and moved, displayed motion). Conversely, parallax barrier is ideal up close, on smaller screens such as smartphones. Both technologies display different areas of an image to your left and your right eye. Your brain fills in the blanks and effectively tricks you into seeing three dimensions.

Another cool thing about these phones? Whether you take a picture or video in 3D or not, it never compromises the quality of the image when you send it to another user. If they have a 3D device, they will see it as you see it; if they have a regular smartphone, it will simply show as a high-quality image. National Reservation System - iPhone 4S

Through this system, a device specifically named for the customer is sent directly to the store of their choice, and is either upgraded or activated for the customer once in store.

A couple of months ago, we blogged about some of the reasons for purchasing a tablet device, yet there still seems to be the question hanging around "But....WHY?"

Last Symbian Standing - The Nokia X7

This past week I had the opportunity to test out the new Nokia X7 and I wanted to let our readers know what to expect with the device.

Design
The Nokia X7 has a very futuristic look to it, with its metal backing and angular design. The device features four grilled "speakers" on the front face, but only two are actually functional. However, this doesn't take away from the epic sound quality when playing movies or music from the phone and keeps the look symmetrical. In addition, the metal backing and seamless buttons across the outside of the phone contribute to a sleek look, as well as the almost-hidden SIM card tray. Although this feature keeps the phone looking smooth, I did have a little trouble working out how the tray ejects from the phone and actually getting it out of the phone.

The phone takes a regular micro-USB charging cable, one of which is included in the box, and also comes with the most comfortable headphones. If you are one of those people that suffers from ear-ache after five minutes of using the traditional headsets that come with most phones, you are in for a surprise. These fit snugly in your ear and provide amazing stereo-quality sound.

User Interface
This is the last Symbian device to come from Nokia, and it seems that finally, the operating system is exceptionally user friendly. In the past, Symbian was known for its ability to allow the user to switch between a home and work profile, which ended up being more confusing than convenient. This time, Symbian Anna puts everything the user needs on one of three home screens:

Icons are very easy to read and understand
Rearranging screen set up is very simple by utilizing the now popular "press and hold" motion, the user can move icons to positions on the main screen that suit their usability best
Quick links to social media feeds, calendar, applications, Youtube, messages etc, make it easy to find what you want, fast
This is a full touch-screen device, and the auto-rotate function has no hesitation which allows the user to quickly obtain a wider, landscape keyboard for faster typing and better viewing
The calendar function provides a great visual display from the third home screen, and allows the user to select and day and review appointments in an adjacent window

In fact, there have been many customers mistaken that this is an Android based operating system and device - definitely a familiar set up for many users.

Multi-media

Aside from the fact that the device comes pre-loaded with the Transformers 3 movie trailer, there are numerous other reasons to check out the multi-media on the Nokia X7.

The 8MP camera is amazing for taking high quality pictures - this one was taken in full daylight with barely any zoom required. The clarity is amazing!
Shots can be captured with the smooth shutter button located on the back sloped side of the device, as well as on the screen itself. The shutter button can sometimes be hard to reach so the on-screen option is great
The video is 720p quality and captures all elements on film, reducing movement blur and ensuring the highest quality video (although I didn't get a chance to video anything over the long weekend, take a look at this sample video from Youtube featuring the X7's 720p camera)

The only bad thing about the cameras on this device is the fact that there is no front-facing camera, so no opportunity to use the full services for applications such as Qik or Skype.

The four-inch Super AMOLED screen, first debuted on the likes of the Samsung Galaxy, makes every picture, wallpaper, video and main screen look crystal clear.

Overall Thoughts
A great device all around. It was easy to use, easy to find most things, and I was blown away by the camera quality (better than my own digital camera). The device was pre-loaded with a bunch of fun apps, including Youtube and even National Geographic for some interesting reading opportunities. Social media feeds were easy to stay up to date with, and check on a regular basis. Email was also extremely easy to set up, if using Gmail or Hotmail (POP3 clients). I have to say, that I think I liked this most of all because it was so similar in looks to the Android platform.

The only (maybe) bad thing I have to say about this device, besides the fussy SIM card tray, was the fact that there aren't as many applications available to the Symbian system as there are for, say Apple or even BlackBerry. But, having said that, I don't use millions of applications anyways, so it's not really a selling point for me. The functionality of the device is what I look for most, and this device seemed to have it all. I was pleasantly surprised.

Understanding Geo-Tagging

This has some great benefits to Smartphone users, mainly as a way of finding information while out on the road. For example, Google Maps has an embedded feature that allows users to open a map, have their location pinpointed, and then find out what particular stores are nearby, depending on the user's search parameters.

Software for geo-tagging is based on a Smartphone's GPS capabilities and embeds the image's latitude and longitude into the meta tag of the image itself - this is only able to be viewed by specific programs that are designed to use this particular information.

For those of us who use our Smartphones to get around, find convenient stores or restaurants in unfamiliar cities, or even just like to know where we are, this is a fantastic option in our devices.

So for those of you that don't like others to know where you are, and vehemently avoid the use of programs such as FourSquare or Places on Facebook, remember that every time you upload an image to your social media feeds, or even send a text message to friends, your device will let them know just where you are. Whether you like it or not - it even goes for regular cell phone users in terms of text (SMS) messages.

This also stands as a warning to those that are quite happy utilizing these services - your images being innocently uploaded can give away your home location or other sensitive information. By all means, upload pictures of last weekend's party at the local bar, but remember to keep the private stuff private...

Rogers is on the verge of introducing its new LTE, or Long Term Evolution, network and when it does, wireless customers are going to witness the new gold standard in wireless transmissions.

App stores look like the new business to be in! With the market growing at an increasingly fast pace, predictions for 2011 have revenue at $3.8billion and 2014 will see an enormous jump to $8.3 billion.

There is literally an application for anything, and most are available on all smartphone platforms, meaning that application providers can reach an enormous customer base.

However, that customer base doesn't just include the regular consumer any more. Small businesses are utilizing applications to streamline their businesses for better efficiency and effectiveness. Applications that help track employees and products, assist with travel plans and help with invoicing outside of the office, are all used increasingly by small and medium businesses.

This is a great money saver for those companies that don't have the funding to invest in large scale, company-wide services. Although the applications themselves are less likely to be free, they are a much lower cost in comparison. Which works well for the smaller guys, looking to better use their money and ensure that they remain competitive.

An interesting article came across my desk recently which talks to the fact that shopping for a new cellphone or smartphone can be a stressful experience for many buyers. The choice of devices available coupled with choosing the right plan can have consumers walking out of the store rather than into it.

iQmetrix has come up with a list of five keys elements that will help your customers have a more positive experience while in your store:

Easy activation: The mobile phone activation process can be complicated, so any efforts to simplify the experience, through patient explanation and advice, will go a long way in increasing customer satisfaction.

RIM Launches Its Much Anticipated BlackBerry PlayBook

Research In Motion's answer to the tablet competition was released today, April 19, amid much speculation that the BlackBerry PlayBook was never going to compare to the likes of Apple's iPad and the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

There have been many reviews recently that stated this wasn't a true tablet due to its reliance on a BlackBerry smartphone to enable its email, calendar and task features.

This device is designed for the avid BlackBerry user, which some has said may alienate other users. This is not necessarily the case as those who don't have a BlackBerry smartphone can still enjoy many of the features of the device, including its HD cameras, presentation and photo / video capabilities, and full internet access over a Wi-Fi connection.

Canada Gets the iPad2 on March 25

We all knew it was inevitable, with the launch of various tablet devices over the past six months, there was no way that Apple was going to be left behind (despite being the innovator for the product).

Yesterday, Apple announced that the iPad2 will be coming to Canada on March 25, and promises to be yet another marvel from the electronics giant. Some of the new features include:

Two cameras (front and rear-facing) for FaceTime users
HD video recording
Dual core chip
9.7inch high-resolution screen
Pre-loaded with iOS4
Updates to existing features, such as the accelerometer, gyro-scope and compass, now work smoothly together
Video-mirroring allows the iPad 2 to plug into your projector or HDTV for full-screen cinematic viewing and sharing
33% thinner and almost 15% lighter than the original iPad
Maintains the same 10-hour battery life

Interactive Shopping Barcodes

Last year we wrote that the advent of online shopping was really taking off, and that consumers were conducting much of their shopping from their Smartphones either through outright purchases or to comparison shop.

Since then, 2011 has brought about the use of 2D codes - square, black and white bar codes that can be used to store various bits of information. These fancy little codes were first introduced through BlackBerry Messenger, where users could add contacts by scanning the bar code of another user with the device's camera. This was essentially a mini-revolution for BlackBerry users - not having to ask for a PIN or even find your own was a great time saver, and made Messenger even more popular.

Now, the knowledge that these 2D codes have the ability to store all kinds of information - essentially anything a retailer or advertiser might want. Some of the ways that the codes have been used so far are:

"Hello, My Name Is" tags - this allows new people to learn more about you, what you do, background information, and other general information
Business Cards - a quick and easy way for people to download all your contact information simply by scanning a code with the camera on their phone
Outdoor Billboards - consumers can walk up to an advertisement and scan a bar code which then takes them to the campaign page for the ad, rather than a company web page. This is particularly awesome for movie advertisements - readers can scan a code and be taken right to the movie trailer or the nearest theater to order tickets
Websites - companies can add 2D codes to their "Contact Us" pages to allow visitors to dial in immediately, without having to search for information
Webinars - adding a 2D code to online presentations can encourage audience involvement, e.g. small contest to test learning
Social Media Sites (LinkedIn, Facebook) - position yourself as a tech-savvy professional, and make it easy for those searching you to find more information about you, or even download your resume
T-Shirts - great for prizes and product giveaways
In-store posters with coupons - instead of having customers find promotional coupons throughout a store when purchasing products, scanning a bar code right at the product can give instant rewards to be obtained at check out
Dial a Phone Number - by using a 2D code to store a phone number, users can simply scan and dial right through to order a product or service
Books, articles and eBooks - direct people to social media related to publications, such as websites for more information, related reads, blogs, forums etc.

One of the up-and-coming companies to work with this technology is Gauge Mobile - a new company that has realized the potential that these codes have in connection with the increased use of Smartphones. This is great for consumers and retailers, no matter who they are or what they sell, due to their ability to "deliver relevant content to an audience at the most opportune time - on their Smartphone" and the fact that they are extremely cost effective, and efficient.

Keep an eye out for these little codes - they seem to be popping up just about anywhere!

Devices To Watch Out For In 2011

With CES 2011 having taken place recently, there is much talk about all the new devices coming to market this year. At this time it is hard to determine which carrier will be responsible for which device, but here are a few to keep your eyes open for as we move into 2011:

Motorola Atrix

This much-hyped device is set to directly compete with the iPhone, with its 4G connectivity and dual-core processor. 1GB RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a 5MP camera and a super wide screen, as well as the latest Android software make this a phone to watch out for. The only sad thing for us at Rogers....this is going to be exclusively available to Bell Canada customers.

Samsung Infuse

Another Android submission as a follow-through from the current Samsung Galaxy S - it's hard to believe that a device could get even more impressive, but it appears that Samsung has done so! A single core processor and 512MB RAM seem at first glance to make this inferior to the existing Galaxy, but take note - 8MP camera and a 4.5" Super AMOLED screen. Not only is the camera comparable (if not better) to most standard digital cameras, but the high resolution, top quality screen will make your pictures crystal clear.

This device is listed as 4G so might not be around until Rogers has fully implemented its LTE network, but definitely one to watch out for. Telus is also likely to carry this model.

LG Optimus 2X

This device is a close competitor for the entire Samsung Galaxy line-up across all carriers, but with a smaller processor. On the plus side, the screen is high quality (800 x 480) and shoots 1080p video - now that beats most digital cameras to the punch. Finally, for those who want a face-to-face experience using applications like Skye, or Qik, there is a front facing camera standard on the device. This is set to be released on all Canadian carriers.

BlackBerry Playbook

This is the highly anticipated BlackBerry response to the iPad. There are almost too many awesome features to describe, but here are just a few to wet your appetite - 3MP forward-facing camera, 5MP rear-facing camera, 1080p HD video recording, 7" LCD display, 1Ghz dual-core processor, and....get this....micro USB and HDMI ports - a first for any tablet device currently on the market. This will be carried by Rogers, but no word yet on whether the other Canadian carriers will have it also. Rumors have it that this will first be available in WiFi only, with the possibility of a 3G+ version later in the year.

The Samsung Galaxy Captivate...in HD

Samsung Galaxy S Captivate

This past Christmas I was given the opportunity to try out a new device. Being a BlackBerry user for the past five or so years, I was hesitant to move away from the familiar. But I had to give this sought-after device a try and see what all the fuss was about. Here are my thoughts...

High Points:

The Super AMOLED screen and 5MP camera make pictures and even the device's screens itself look crisp and clear. Taking some shots of the family Christmas tree put my own digital camera to shame!
The still and video cameras each have multiple settings depending on what you are shooting - the last Canucks game I went to was a great chance to try this out. By selecting the "action shot" feature in the camera, it was as if all the players had posed for their pictures - no blurring from movement!
There are literally thousands of applications for almost anything - and they can be accessed right from the device. The one thing that really got me, was the device's ability to download these apps in the background and simply notify me when they were done. There was no rebooting required!
Due to access to all the applications, including those to customize the device with live wallpapers, my Captivate looks nothing like anyone else's. Of course the physical device is the same, but once you take a look through it, nothing else looks familiar.
The touch screen capabilities are sensitive enough to recognize your touch when typing, but when on the phone, it automatically senses when it is close to my face, and ensures that I don't accidentally press something in the middle of a call. Great to avoid putting someone on hold with my face....
It was so easy to add my emails to the phone once I was ready to use it. I have a corporate email that just required a few inputs to get everything active, including all my contacts, and Gmail was even easier, only requiring a few steps to load up. Both emails look just as they do at my desktop which means I can access my messages quickly when I need to - the Gmail account even shows the labels I have added in my online Inbox, and allows me to apply them to new messages right from the phone
The device has such a massive on board memory (16GB to be precise) that I was able to load nearly 1000 songs without needing a memory card. And it didn't seem to phase the phone either - everything ran just as smoothly as normal. But even so, adding a memory card into the phone is equally smooth - no configuring required, and the phone will even do its own security scan of the files just to make sure everything is okay
Text messaging brings on a whole new way to type - SWYPE technology allows you to slide your finger across the keyboard instead of tapping individual keys to spell a word. This might sound like a strange feature, but when using a touchscreen, you can type as fast as if you had buttons at your fingertips. This is definitely one more thing to get used to, but everyone I know who has tried it, has never gone back to the standard style
For such a powerful device, it sure is slim and sleek. Far less bulky than many other Smartphones out there, it amazes me that this phone is capable of so much
And on the note of sleek and slim, you might think that as a result, battery size and life is compromised. As with any Smartphone, data is constantly flowing back and forth which consumes battery, but in order to make up for this, the Galaxy Captivate has battery saving features that kick in once your battery starts to wane - features that you don't have to physically ensure are working. The phone just does it!

Downsides:

It is a full touch screen device....and there are times when I just want to push a button - new users to the Captivate will need to give themselves at least a couple of weeks to get used to the phone (the same goes for the SWYPE technology - give yourself at least a few messages to become familiar with how it works)
There is no flash on the camera - for a device with such a great screen and camera capability, it is a shame that taking pictures at night, or even in a poorly lit room, is pretty much a no-no. Perhaps future versions of the device will incorporate this feature - I hope so!
I mentioned I have been a BlackBerry user for a number of years - I miss my BBM! There are many applications designed to go across various operating systems, such as Kick or WhatsApp, but nothing really compares to the first instant messenger that many of us know and love. In fact, if you are a BB user trying to chat with people through WhatsApp, the application just doesn't work as well as it does on the Android or iPhone operating systems
Although setting up email was quick and easy, I would recommend not merging your email accounts. The device tends to find any and all email addresses and list them in the address book....rather frustrating when an email has only been used once. In addition, the device has some sort of ability to merge contacts together, which can result in duplicates - and for those that did duplicate, one would have a picture, the other wouldn't, or each would be entirely different!

Overall, this device is definitely a lot of fun to play with. It is great as a functional, work-based device, but is also perfect for all the fun you want. There is pretty much an app for anything, you can truly make the phone yours, and with the new Android 2.2 software, battery life is far better than it used to be, and there are some small tweaks that just make the phone run a lot more efficiently.

I find that I learn something new everyday with this phone, so I can't wait to see what tomorrow has in store!

Top Wireless Moments of 2010

I make a point of reading through my monthly delivery of marketnews for all the latest information on the wireless industry and the exciting developments coming out.

In the most recent edition, I came across a small article that featured some amusing stories from the past year, and I thought that others would appreciate a moment of entertainment. Be aware that the companies involved in these stories probably didn't find these as funny as we do...

Apple Loses the iPhone 4
An Apple employee accidentally left a prototype iPhone 4 at a bar he had visited, and the device found its way into the hands of an "innocent" patron who claimed to have tried returning the device to its owner. Upon being unable to reach the owner, the patron decided to sell the device to Gizmodo, further resulting in leaked images, rumors as to its arrival in the market, and a chase to retrieve the lost device.

Apple "Antenna-Gate"
It is rather amusing on its own to see that Apple features twice in these stories....but the realization that the side placement of the antenna in the iPhone 4 meant that owners could cover it while talking, had new users up in arms over losing signal strength each time they were on a call. Apple made the suggestion that users should purchase a case to slip their iPhone into - problem solved, right? Apparently not....consumers were unimpressed that they had to make yet another purchase to ensure their already expensive new Smartphone would work. Considering that the cost to replace every handset sold was in the range of $1.5billion, Apple felt that providing customers with a free case was the best, and cheapest, solution for its customers. Not the perfect result, but it seemed to make people happy....

Woman Sues Rogers for Her Infidelity
Many feel that Americans are quick to sue over any and all situations, and that Canadians are far too smart to do anything similar....apparently that is not the case here. In May 2010, a woman decided to sue Rogers because her husband found out about her cheating through a cell phone bill. At first glance, the immediate question is "How is this Rogers' fault?!" Apparently, Rogers consolidated her private cell phone bill with her husband's cable and Internet services (as a money saver) without her authorization. Upon reviewing her bill and seeing multiple calls to one number, the husband chose to leave his wife. As a result, she has chosen to sue Rogers in the amount of $500,000 for her pain and suffering....

The $8,000 Phone Bill
Soon after the Rogers legal incident above, a man from Alberta chose to go after his own wireless carrier, Virgin Mobile, after he received an $8000 phone bill. Many of us would simply assume that an error had been made in the billing system and that he was justified in making a noise about it.

However, upon further investigation, it was revealed that this customer had recently returned from Europe where he had used his phone almost the entire time to do the following tasks:

Making and receiving calls;
Navigation to and from various destinations;
Accessing a digital translator; and (this is the most ridiculous)....
Listening to a streaming clock radio station from his hometown of Calgary for a total of FIVE hours!

There is no way that someone can claim any kind of innocence for using data to that extent while in another country. And I have to directly quote marketnews for this comment...."if you engage in these acts thinking that through some miracle of the cross-country wireless gods, they're free, the onus is on you. They're called 'smart' phones for a reason. But the device shouldn't have to act more intelligently than it's owner." Enough said!

So, despite the fact that 2010 was a landmark year for smartphones and development in many connected areas, it appears that it wasn't a year for smart actions on the parts of many individuals. Here's hoping 2011 brings some common sense to us all!

What Does 2011 Have In Store For The Wireless Industry?

2010 was definitely a landmark year for the adoption of Smartphone and other mobile devices, such as tablets, and also for the development of software, operating systems and applications for just about anything you can think of.

So how is 2011 going to see in the new year of wireless communications and technology?

Todd Engels of Marketing Drive has identified the following five trends that we should look out for in the coming year:

1) Leveraging the power of social media to drive commerce (e.g. Groupon)
Groupon has been the innovator when it comes to group based purchasing, and it will be exciting to see how this method of promotion will affect distribution, effectiveness and efficiency of special offers to consumers.

2) Integration of mobile (handheld) into shopping marketing programming
This allows for additional touch points with the consumer throughout the shopping process. Creating that additional connection can allow companies to capture early adopters and be more innovative themselves.

3) Marginalization of “brand.com” promotional websites
Companies are looking to feature their brands and offers on existing social networking sites, sharing sites, or potential partner sites to save having to create their own stand-alone web presence.

4) Localization of promotion
There is more of a move to grass-roots levels in local communities, even with the use of the Internet to facilitate promotions, offers and products / services.

5) Continued blurring of the line between content and promotion
Companies are looking to have their promotional messages linked smoothly and continuously over a number of media, such as TV, print and gaming. They want to keep the promotion indistinguishable from the content because of the ability to deliver in high-value brand environments. Integration into video games, for example, is a new venture that many companies are stepping into, as a new way to reach their audience.

These five points all cover the element of Smartphone-mobile integration for the consumer. With new online opportunities emerging all the time, and existing elements continuing to move forwards, 2011 will definitely be the year to watch the communications industry.

A few posts ago, I had noted that there was an influx of consumers starting to use the Smartphones to scout out the latest deals and offers that would make their Christmas shopping efficient, easy and epic.

Well, it turns out that online shopping for the Christmas season has so far reached $22 billion...and there is still a week to go until the big day. I guess that means there are more than just a few people utilizing Smartphones for deals and learning to shop online. It also explains why many of the wireless dealers have experienced a slight slow down in past weeks - an odd situation considering that this time last year, stores were packed to the hilt and sales reps didn't know which way to turn next to service their next customer!

There have been numerous incentives to shoppers looking to buy online, such as free shipping, which is most likely to be a winner for those looking to save a little something in the process. Even the promise of expedited shipping at no cost, ensures that these customers not only are saving money, but are going to be able to get their gifts to their loved ones right on time.

Online shopping is becoming more popular with the presence of services such as Groupon, and GoLoDeal, but don't forget your wireless dealers!

I doubt there are many dealers that don't have their own website set up - these allow customers to review devices, check plan details, special offers, and even order through secure sites - you even have the choice of picking up your order, or having it shipped. Whatever is most convenient for you.

iPad Alternatives Are Becoming More Popular

With the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Tab, there is the expectation that more corporate users are going to demand it for their mobile internet needs. With the move away from paper and bulky laptops, tablets such as the Galaxy are likely to be popular with hospitals, doctors, and other business folk that have, until now, had to deal with endless paperwork.

The wait for the BlackBerry Playbook has also created an interest in these kinds of users, and functions such as HD capabilities, front and rear facing cameras, and the ability to tether with a BlackBerry device, such as the Torch, are tempting customers away from the ever-popular Apple iPad.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is the first tablet device to allow full Flash performance, and with it's super high resolution AMOLED screen, the user experience is extremely impressive.

Until now, the Apple iPad has commanded tablet sales with a 95% share of the market, but other manufacturers are jumping on the tablet bandwagon, with products set to emerge from Hewlett Packard, Motorola, Lenovo and Acer in the near future.

Companies that have so far focused their sales on standard PC's and laptops are looking to reduce their sales forecasts for these types of products in anticipation of cannibalization by the tablet market. Most pricing is set to stay around the levels that Apple has set with its iPad, which suggests that customers are quite happy to pay between $299 and $699 for a new tablet.

This is definitely going to be an interesting market to watch over the Christmas season, and well into 2011. New competitors, new products - all very exciting!

The wireless industry has changed significantly over the years when it comes to the devices that are available, and the plans that customers can choose from. But the biggest change is how knowledgeable and informed those customers are.

The fact that customers are up to date with the devices they are looking for as well as what is coming to market, is going to be a notable element to the upcoming Christmas season. A study conducted in the US by Mobile Marketing Association found that 59% of mobile consumers plan to use their smartphone and its applicable applications to shop and plan this season, and 64% plan to research deals and offers on devices before they head to stores (Eric Zimmerman).

In addition to scoping out the latest deals and information, the emergence of more Smartphone users this year, will mean that these consumers are utilitzing their devices to assist with the busy shopping weeks ahead. With applications available to help them find their cars, stores within their favourite malls, and barcode scanners to assist with comparison shopping, there is everything people need to get their shopping done effectively and efficiently.

Somewhat ironic, is the fact that retailers have been slow to adopt the shopping applications, such as mobile coupons or store websites that are not designed to work on mobile devices. Geolocation Applications:

Foursquare currently leads the way, with the ability to log in to various locations in order to obtain points, badges and mayorships

This is another geolocation app that alerts customers as they walk past or near an eligible business location

Most Consumers Don't Know When Their Wireless Contract Ends

A recent Best Buy Mobile Survey announced that more than half of US cellphone owners have no idea of the month and year when their wireless contract expires.

Only 40% of those surveyed received reminders as to when their contract was about to expire. This means that customers are mis-informed when it comes to upgrades and plan options available to them.

Shawn Score, Best Buy Mobile's president, comments "When it comes to mobile solutions available today, many consumers are not armed with the right information to truly get the most out of their mobile phone."

This is something that Canadian wireless providers see too. I have lost count of the number of people that have come into our locations, having purchased their phone elsewhere, with no idea how to use the phone, or even why they purchased it in the first place.

One suggestion is to have a customer loyalty program that provides them with information to stop them using devices that are years old, and moving them to something that is going to better suit their needs. And with the advent of so many different applications for the hundred of smartphones out there, wireless retailers can even create loyalty programs that work via text, email, mobile coupons or online apps. The key? Simply staying in touch with those customers.

Although the survey was conducted in the US, Canadian wireless providers are likely to see similar trends. Some other facts found include the following:

67% of consumers indicated “carriers” were their main influence when buying a phone
23% of respondents chose the phone they bought based on the device itself
10% chose a phone based on its operating platform (e.g. iPhone, Android, Windows Phone 7, etc.)
Other phone purchasing priorities include: music, video and camera (45%), GPS navigation (32%), intent to replace landline phone (29%), social networking capability (26%), Wi-Fi (26%), e-commerce capability (15%), movie downloads (15%) and games (14%).

Facebook Launches "Places" - Huge Impact for Wireless Users

On August 19, Facebook created a new service through its site called Places. This pits the social networking giant against existing location-based applications such as FourSquare.

The new feature aims at helping existing users find friends and their locations in real time, and actually works with the existing services such as FourSquare. The advantage for Facebook is that is doesn't have to find new userts - it's 500 million users have access to this new option.

This is another addition to the social networking site's move to monetize its network usage, particularly among its mobile users. More than one quarter of Facebook users access the site from their Smartphones, and this allows the site to promote the use of mobile coupons for various services (as FourSquare currently does).

Facebook's Places essentially turns a user's Smartphone into a combination of GPS, social network (the world’s biggest), loyalty card, ad space and coupon dispenser - things that will potentially draw millions of retailers to start offering real-time, location based deals to users.

Of course, this comes with its fair share of concerns about privacy, but unlike the release of Places in other regions, such as the US, Facebook users have the option to turn this feature off if they don't wish to participate. It remains to be seen how successful this new feature will be, but with the increase in Smartphone users growing every day, it is only a matter of time before Places touches millions.

This month has seen the return of students to their respective institutions, and what a month for wireless this has been!

With a huge influx of quick messaging and touch screen devices, such as the Samsung Corby Pro and the LG Neon 2, students have had their fair share of phones to choose from.

There has definitely been an increase in wireless activity among students, even from last year, as purchasing a new phone has become a staple of the "Back To School Shopping List".

And more students are moving away from the standard cellular device, embracing the Smartphone trend that offers a more feature-rich experience. Not only do these devices give students access to their email, but they can stay up to date with their friends on campus via the social networking sites that seem to be a standard on new devices.

It's definitely true that there is an app for everything.

What Would You Do Without Your Smartphone Keyboard?

For those folks that made the brave leap from BlackBerry and other Smartphone devices to the iPhone upon its original release two years ago, they are already used to the concept of a virtual keyboard when typing out messages and dialing phone numbers.

However, the rest of us Smartphone users like to have a real keyboard at our fingertips. Some manufacturers have tried to soften the move from actual keypad to touch screen with the introduction of devices like the LG Xenon that has a slide out keyboard and a touch screen option.

But Google is looking to take things one step further by eliminating keyboards entirely! The release of the Nexus One, has allowed users in the US to start to experiment with what Google hopes is the future of mobile search: voice- and picture-based searching.

The idea behind this is that users can simply speak a phrase into their phone and generate a search engine result, in the same manner as we currently type into Google. The other option is to take a picture of something, such as a specific landmark, and have results and information returned simply by submitting the picture. Pretty handy if you don't know what you are looking at!

These ideas are still in early development and aren't very reliable just yet. Currently, voice searching works well with short strings of words only, but even one misplaced word doesn't throw off your search entirely which is a good thing - somewhat like when you make a typo in the search engine on your computer. Google Goggles is the new visual searching application that is being tested - also hit and miss at present though. This allows you to take a picture of something where the image is then scanned with "recognizers" for text and familiar visuals in Google's databases.

Although these are still early days, testers are hopeful that something like this will take off, and may even lead to facial recognition technology. However, Google doesn't want to approach that end at all, as there just aren't any valid reasons as to why someone would need that.

Voice- and picture-based searching can eventually lead the way to future features like:

The ability to photograph a printed page so it can be scanned into text and quickly translated into another language
The ability for travelers to speak a phrase into a phone, have it translated into another language and played back through their phone's speaker

With more and more people taking on smartphones as part of their daily inventory, there have been some common elements when it comes to what they look for before purchasing. 29% of the US population in Q4 2009 owned a smartphone, and the number is set to increase as 2010 moves ever forwards - this makes it so important for providers, like Rogers, to understand what their users want.

The same survey found that the following items were a must have for new and continuing smartphone users:

1. Email (demanded by 85% of users)

2. Internet browser (demanded by 78%)

3. Digital camera (demanded by 73%)

Although these three elements shouldn't be the basis of your sales pitch, they certainly help focus the pitch, and allow sales representatives to direct their questions to new, or existing, smartphone users accordingly.

Pretty much all smartphones have the above capabilities, so sales representatives need to focus on how the customer is going to use their phone the most, so that they can recommend the most suitable device out of the large number available.

In addition, as much as many people hate to admit it, text and email are becoming the more commonplace means of communication now, instead of simply picking up the phone and talking to someone. This is mainly due to the quick and instant nature of the message, versus a long winded telephone call when you are in a rush. Did you know that 91% of all phone owners were four times more likely to respond to a text message than voicemail??

With this trend in mind, and the fact that smartphones are meant to have lower voice call quality than standard cellular devices, sales reps should always ask how dependent customers are on voice services, as part of the "How are you going to / how do you use your smartphone?" New Contender in the Wireless Industry Space

Apple announces the launch of the iPad...

...and Rogers Wireless is set to be the official carrier for the product.

Information appears to be limited to us at the Rogers end because there has been no word yet on whether our dealer locations will hold the product itself, or if we are just expected to provide the data activations for the device.

So far, two data plans have been announced for the iPad, and many of us are expecting customers to purchase the device at the Apple Stores, and then come to a Rogers location to activate or add their data plan to existing accounts:

$15 for 250MB
$35 for 5GB

And as with the release of the original iPhone, there are always the complaints that Rogers isn't providing an unlimited data plan. If you ask me 5GB is a serious amount of data!

In the past, responses to the lack of an "unlimited" data plan prompted Rogers to offer a 6GB data plan - an extremely popular plan with data users Canada-wide. And although the complaints continued, statistics show that the average user of an iPhone only needed about 500MB of data a month! So what's all the fuss about?! Especially when there is Wi-Fi built in.

And who's to say that things won't change as the iPad becomes a more substantial product within the Rogers Wireless space? Rogers has never carried a product quite like the iPad, and only time will tell as to how customers will react to it, purchase it, use it etc.

Experience with the iPhone might help our dedicated sales representatives to anticipate questions, concerns, and expectations for the iPad.

The iPad comes in two main specifications - Wi-Fi alone, and Wi-Fi with 3G - and has three sizes - 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. Pricing is likely to be similar to the US where the Wi-Fi 16GB model starts at $499.99.

It will be interesting to see how this new product impacts the wireless and notebook markets - Rogers already has their Netbook products out in the market, and the way I see it...the iPad is likely to blow all of them out of the water.

Social Networking....On Your Wireless Device

Social networking has always been a personal affair, with special events set up to ensure industry colleagues, office-mates and others can meet and connect in one space with ease.

However with the introduction of websites online, social networking has become an increasingly online process, with fewer people meeting in person, instead choosing to instant message, ‘poke' and provide status updates so everyone knows what they are up to.

A further development has been the production of cellular devices that are centered entirely on social networking. Data plans are being introduced that allow users who might not necessarily want to surf the Internet, but still want access to all the popular sites, including Twitter, Facebook and MySpace. And these options are becoming increasingly more affordable to all users, including those who might never have used a cellular device in the past.

A survey conducted by the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association discovered that more than 65% of Canadians aged 16 and 17 own a mobile device, 30% of those are 13 - 15, and 5% of those are aged 8 - 12 years of age.

Wireless carriers see this young influential market as a target for building brand loyalty immediately, as these users are usually purchasing a device for the first time. In recent weeks, this market has been targeted specifically with the Touch phone products, providing users with unlimited text messaging, social networking, and lower monthly service fees.

The move from phone calls and physical interaction to online updates and texting may mean that even our desktop computers are set to become obsolete. And the expansion of features on cell phones now, such as cameras, picture / video messaging etc, all make it much easier to stay connected with everyone at all times.

This may mean that wireless carriers have to tailor more of their plans to suit the heavy mobile social networker - providing more for less. These users are likely to be a large portion of the market for existing carriers and those coming into the market soon.

Wireless Device Software for BlackBerry Bold 9700

BlackBerry ® BoldTM 9700 customers can now update their device's software over the air using the Rogers wireless network or through Wi-Fi.

To check if a BlackBerry Bold 9700 has the latest device software, customers will need to click on "Options" from their home screen, select "Advanced Options" and then "Wireless Update."

If an update is available they will be able to download and install it over the air with no charge for the data used during the update.

Eligibility & Restrictions:

Customers must have a BlackBerry data plan to perform updates over the air. Please note that Rogers Wireless customers with the $15 Personal Email plan are not eligible for wireless updates.

Customers will not be able to upgrade over the air while roaming but will be able to check for software update availability when they return to Canada.

Customers can use their device during the download process, but not during the installation process. They may pause or cancel the download process to make or receive calls, however, if the customer answers a call during the download process, the download process pauses automatically. The download process resumes once the call has ended.

Before performing a wireless software update, customers must make sure their device has the following:

64 MB of flash memory
BlackBerry device software 5.0 or later
Battery power level of at least 50%
An available wireless network connection

Carrier Competition in Canda

There have been endless rumours about new carriers coming into the market in Canada - rumours that have at times made sales difficult as a result of new and existing customer hesitation to sign any contracts.

As a result of recent spectrum auctions, there is a new "Three" set to enter the Canadian wireless market - WIND Mobile, Mobilicity and Public Mobile. The first two carriers are set to provide coverage in major areas across Canada, but Public Mobile is set to focus just on Quebec and Ontario for the time being.

Mobilicity (also known as DAVE Wireless):

Set to launch in the spring of 2010
Simplistic pricing is a dominant focus, with an intention to provide all-encompassing plans (the company has yet to provide specifics at this time)
Will offer no contracts, no credit checks, and unlimited calling and data
Will offer a selection of Smartphones from RIM and Nokia as well as USB Internet sticks
Service will roll out in major cities, beginning with Toronto, and moving into Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Ottawa later in the year
Mobilicity feels that its simple services will be what really set the brand apart from the other emerging brands

Public Mobile:

Will not be offering data services at launch (spring 2010)
Service plan pricing will be extremely simple - pay $40 and get unlimited talk and text within the company's coverage area
Services will be set up and running in Toronto and Montreal with plans to extend to core cities and urban areas over the months following
Phones can be purchased outright, with entry level devices costing less than $100 and "high end" models still remaining under $200
Phones will include four or five at launch - there will be no BlackBerry devices or other Smartphones
Over time, the intention is to add more features, functions and handsets as consumers demand them
Public Mobile functions on the G-block of spectrum, which is a CDMA band - this means that only handsets that support the band will function on the Public Mobile network

WIND Mobile:

Service up and running in Toronto and Calgary since December 2009. Services in Ottawa and Edmonton are in progress and Vancouver will follow in Q2
There are 40 stores in Toronto and Calgary, including 16 store-within-store concepts in Blockbuster locations
Social and laid back feel defines the brand and is translated through the customer experience
Target customers are the youthful, socially connected folks aging from 18 to 30 years old
Second target market is the ethnic markets that have just come to Canada
Premise behind WIND is the customer's ability to buy a phone outright, without a contract, and then select which plan options they require - for example, a BlackBerry Bold 9700 is $450 through WIND, compared to only $150 with Rogers (and a three year contract). There is question as to whether the higher price is worth the lack of contract, especially if the phone only works on the WIND network and nowhere else.
WIND has roaming agreements that allow its devices to work outside coverage areas - postpaid customers are able to roam in the US; still working out issues to allow pre-paid customers to do the same
Long-term goal is to become a national carrier
WIND plans to expand its handset lineup, and is looking at third-party retailers

The common elements between each of these new providers, is the desire to reduce the need for contracts, provide simplified pricing options and to target the 30% of Canadians who still don't have a mobile phone.

What does this mean for the existing carriers? Incumbent providers - Rogers, Bell and TELUS - have to take steps to better their services, which have so far included remove the System Access Fee from customer bills. In addition, "The Big Three" have made it possible for customers to purchase devices outright, i.e. without a contract.

Aside from having to compete with the new carriers, Rogers, Bell and TELUS have to deal with their own situation - the introduction of Bell and TELUS' high-speed networks has the three carriers competing directly with one another now.

As a whole, the introduction of more competition is definitely a plus for the consumer, providing more choice, simplicity, and competitive pricing. Nadir Mohammed, President & CEO of Rogers Communications Inc has stated that "Competition will keep everyone on their toes, drive innovation and hold down prices. All of this will be good for the consumer." But what does this mean for the present carriers?

Only time will tell as we move further into 2010, and see the full emergence of these new companies. Wireless is about to get a shakeup unseen to date.

Wireless Wallet?

Could this be the future of our wireless services? The inclusion of a "pay pass" style item that simply attaches to the bottom of your iPhone or iPod could further consolidate the number of items that we carry with us as we go about our daily tasks.

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a newly emerging technology that many organizations are taking on in an effort to streamline inventory processes, tracking, payment, and overall logistics. These small chips are inserted or attached to specific items within the product line and are scanned via handheld scanners (by employees) or large scale industrial scanners (for items fixed to a pallet for transportation).

Near Field Communication (NFC) is a short range high frequency wireless communication technology that enables the exchange of data between devices within a range of about 4 inches.

Combined, these elements will work together to turn your iPhone or iPod into a payment device, much like the recent introduction of the MasterCard "Pay Pass".

These items come in the form of a small attachment, the iCarte, which connects to the bottom of your device, and has an embedded smart chip that configures the device to act like a debit card, credit card, pre-paid card, or even a loyalty card.

The information is then transferred to the iPhone or iPod to allow the user to complete secure transactions, download electronic coupons, tickets or receipts, check balances or connect with other NFC devices. Business iPhone users can use the iCarte for commercial applications such as asset tracking, document tracking and security.

Available in white or black, the iCarte will coordinate with whichever colour device you have, and will only extend the length of the device by about 16.5mm.

Will this eliminate the need for carrying a wallet too? So far, the iPhone 3GS, for example, has combined a phone, email device, media device (video, music) into one unit - with the potential addition of a credit card reader this phone could definitely become a lifeline.

So far, no word on whether there are talks for a BlackBerry or other Smartphone version of the iCarte, but we'll keep looking!

Android seems to be the talk of the town in recent days and weeks around the communications water cooler. The newest contender for the GSM market is the Samsung Galaxy Spica i5700 - although this is North America's first Samsung Android to come to market, it is the second seen in Europe and the fourth worldwide.

Features:

Pre-installed "switcher" applications
Two colour variations - black/red and white/green
3.2 inch screen with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels, and supporting 16 million colours

User Feedback - Positive:

Fashionable and sleek
Slim and compact with minimal navigational buttons
Applications load smoothly one at a time
Platform is user friendly, especially for those who have previous experience with the Android OS
Device can run continuously for two days on HSPA (3G) connectivity
Moving through applications on the device is smooth and simple, with only a handful of front facing buttons to use

User Feedback - Not-So-Positive:

Looks very similar to a previous model
Surface is prone to fingerprints and scratches
Only 200MB of internal storage
No flash on the 3.2MP camera
Having a hard time keeping up with the previous model in terms of speed, functionality, and in-built items, such as the camera and on-board storage
Have to hold the unlock button down for a long period of time to get the handset going
Device can become laggy when using multiple applications

Overall Thoughts:

An average device suitable for users that like some multi-media capabilities. If the user is not hard on the device, and wants something to keep them connected, then the Galaxy Spica is the Android device for them. However, for those power users who want something a little more impressive, critics are suggesting the "older brother" model, the i7500.

The latest addition to the Rogers lineup is the Rocket Hub - a 3G wireless router, designed to bring high speed internet to even the most remote of locations. As long as you have access to the Rogers Wireless Network, you can access the web. In addition to high speed internet access, the Rocket Hub allows users the ability to connect their home phone lines for improved voice calling.

The device is powered by Sony Ericsson, and is only about the size of a regular paperback novel. A true "Plug and Play" item, the user plugs the device into a power outlet and immediately connects to the Rogers 3G network.

The single phone port on the back of the device allows rural areas to receive telephone service without having to wait for service providers to install phone lines - a task that can take weeks. As the device relies on the wireless network, it must be connected for users to be able to make calls - if the power goes out, there is no wireless connection.

Benefits of the Rocket Hub:

Extremely user friendly through set up - a true "Plug and Play" device
Ability to share internet connection between up to thirteen computers

User Review after Using the Rocket Hub:

The product is convenient for those in need of a wireless / LAN network for either personal or business use, in areas where service is regularly unavailable
The speed generated on the device averaged about 4mbps on our review (during peak times), which is ideal for internet browsing, email, and streaming video. During off-peak times, the speed increased to 6mbps.
Slight disappointment that the device is not HSPA+ ready with the ability to reach speeds of 21mbps, considering that this will soon become standard on the Rogers Wireless network
This would not be a good solution for those users looking to use the Rocket Hub for online gaming purposes - internet response time is not fast enough
Although the Rocket Hub is made of plastic, it has a solid and durable feel to it when on hand. It doesn't break easily upon moving, and its lightweight design allows for ease of carrying
The voice quality of calls made using the Rocket Hub were comparable to making a cellular telephone call - much better than using VoIP.

Target Market

The Rocket Hub is a suitable product for any customer who requires access to high speed internet and / or voice services, for personal or business use. There are two plans available to suit that usage, starting at $35 per month for the data only option.

The Benefits of Upgrading Your Wireless Device

Until January this year, existing Rogers customers were subject to various hardware "tier" levels when choosing to upgrade their device. This tier system was based on an individual customer's tenure and revenue, with Tier 1 being the lowest and Tier 5 being the highest and best.
All existing customers were fully eligible to upgrade after 24 months from their last upgrade or initial activation, but the closer to the 24 month mark they chose to upgrade, the higher their pricing would be on specific devices. And to top it off, unless a customer was listed as Tier 4 or 5, new customer pricing was actually better - an issue deemed extremely unfair for customers who had shown their loyalty to the Rogers network for years.

As a result, Rogers Wireless updated its hardware upgrade policies, effective January 15th 2010. The new program now provides in-market pricing for all eligible existing customers. This means that even customers who would have been considered Tier 1 in the past are eligible to receive the best price on a particular device regardless of how much they spend each month in revenue or how long it has been since their last upgrade.

Wireless Communication Becomes Completely Hands-Free

As of October 1, 2009 and January 1, 2010, Ontario and British Columbia, respectively, introduced new laws preventing the use of hand held cell phones, portable electronic devices and text messaging while driving. Moving forwards, only hands-free cell phones and devices that require one touch to activate are permitted for drivers to operate.

In BC, there has been a 30 day "grace" period allowing drivers to obtain hands-free kits for their vehicles, with the new $167 fines going into full effect February 1, 2010. In addition to this fine, BC drivers are subject to three points on their license if caught text messaging while driving.

As a result, the wireless communications industry has seen a rise in sales of Bluetooth accessories, which includes headsets and visor kits. Ontario locations have had a hard time keeping these accessories in stock since the introduction of the law, and accessory vendors suffer from back orders on a regular basis. And it looks like the same is happening here in BC, mainly because most manufacturers and vendors are located in the already out-of-stock Ontario region.

Bluetooth accessory providers have two popular options for hands-free cell phone use while driving: a head-set that fits snugly in the user's ear, or a visor mount that clips right to a sun visor within the vehicle itself. Many of these headsets are voice activated, and the visor mounts connect right to a device's address book, further eliminating the need for even one-touch dialing. With recognized names such as BlackBerry, BlueAnt, Motorola and Nokia all providing Bluetooth products, users are able to rely on their favourite manufacturers to provide them with all of their Bluetooth needs, to ensure all drivers are law-abiding and ready for the new law.

If the device includes an earpiece, that earpiece can be worn in one ear only, and must be placed in the ear prior to driving
The sound is emitted through the speakers of the sound system of the vehicle (for hand-held audio players)
The device is programmed prior to driving (for GPS)
The device is securely fixed to the vehicle or worn securely on the person's body
The device must be installed in a manner that doesn't affect the driver's view of the front or sides of the vehicle or interfere with the safety or operating equipment of the vehicle

Fines and Penalties:

Offence - the use of an electronic device that is not allowed for in the legislation but that does not involve texting, emailing or dialing, e.g. talking on a hand held cell phone
Penalty - $167 fine and no penalty points
Offence - the use of an electronic device for communicating with another person or another device by email or other text based message, e.g. texting, emailing or dialing
Penalty - $167 and 3 penalty points
